Low-Toxic Master Bedroom, Storrington
The Brief:
To update our clients master bedroom in their new home. To make the room calm, decluttered and most of all to use low VOCs and MITs in everything used to create a non-toxic bedroom. To make the room restful but not bland and include some Scandi design influences.
Before…
When we first visited, the room felt cold and bare, there was no warmth to the space. Our clients had been nervous to add anything new because of their severe allergies to toxins within the home, The lighting was bad and the wardrobe space felt clumsy. Our client’s wanted to give the room the higher end feeling they had experienced in hotels, while still keeping the room uncluttered and ‘clean’.
There was not enough storage and the room felt cold.
The wardrobes were stand alone with shiny panelled doors that had yellowed.
The room was lovely and light and had great potential.
The Project:
First and foremost we needed to address the most important element of the brief which was to keep the toxins low in everything we brought into the bedroom design. Read more about how we created a low toxin environment in our blog here. Everything had to be considered from fabrics and mattresses, paint to timber.
We started on the basics that effect the usage of the room and make a space feel more high end before you even consider aesthetics. We skimmed the ceiling, looked at lighting and considered ways to get better storage without the room feeling too busy.
We sourced low or non-toxic furniture. When we couldn’t find bedside storage that was non-toxic so bespoke bedside tables were designed and made which fitted the brief and the space perfectly. Panelling was created using natural timber. We chose lighting that avoided fabrics and was easy to clean. We added plants that are great for the air and used natural linens and organic cotton for the bedding. Paint is a big consideration for MITs so we used Little Knights paint which is 100% VOC free.
The Outcome
A non-toxic master bedroom that our client loves and feels confident to use despite her allergies. A calm, scandi inspired, high end space that uses muted colours to create a cosy but tranquil space.

We liked Hannah's holistic approach to design: taking our health needs and interests into account while considering the function and form of spaces. Hannah is flexible and very personable, which meant it felt very comfortable having her in our home.
We were very happy with the designs - Hannah pretty much nailed our style right off the bat with minimal changes needed. It was incredibly useful to receive a shopping list of products and to have guidance on high-quality tradespeople, who completed the necessary works to a good standard.
Guest Room & Landing Design
We also worked with this lovely client on their guest room and hallway design, using the same non-toxic home design brief.
Colourful, fun and cosy, while of course also being non-toxic
A bit of fun on the landing
